I taught myself algorithms with the Algorithm Design Manual by Skiena, and I strongly recommend it.

The Algorithm Design Manual is a great book, but seems to focus more on giving a tour of different problem types and their associated algorithms than developing a deeper understanding of the theory behind it all.

I lot of people recommend CLRS and I've certainly studied from parts of it but I found Skiena's The Algorithm Design Manual to be far more approachable and enjoyable.

Personally, I recommend either Algorithms by Dasgupta, Papadimitriou, and Vazirani, or The Algorithm Design Manual by Skiena.

I would recommend to work through one or several less "ultimate" books about algorithms, my favorite in this area is The Algorithm Design Manual by Steven S.

I would recommend against "Algorithm Design Manual" for your purposes and for skimming Cormen or Wikipedia instead.
